The brush tail Possum is a nocturnal marsupial that was introduced to help establish the New Zealand fur trade. Although their coats are soft and fluffy, their numbers have reached epidemic proportions resulting in the stripping of New Zealand's lush green native forests.
As a consequence, New Zealand's unique bird life has been decimated by the destruction of their habitat. It is estimated that Possums chew through around 7 million tonnes of vegetation in a year. Programmes are in place to help control the Possum so that our native bird life such as the Kiwi can have a better chance in our forests.
