
Paua is a species of abalone (Haliotis Iris).
The Haliotis Iris is the largest, commonest and therefore best known of
our species. This shellfish, is unique to New Zealand's environmentally
pure coastal waters.
Maori have used the Paua Shell to decorate their carvings, weapons and
meeting houses. Now, the Paua Shell is used to create stunningly
beautiful jewellery, worn with pride as a symbol of New Zealand.
The Paua is renowned throughout the world not only for its beautiful shell
but also for its edible dark, full flavoured flesh. Paua meat is a traditional
delicacy for the Maori.
